Written by His Hand

Ours isn't the best love story the world could ever hear, but it is the best love story God has given for the two of us.

We did not meet during a fireworks display or under the rain. He wasn't a knight in shining armor nor was I a damsel in distress when we first met. We were simply two ordinary people loved by an extraordinary God. In this world filled with billions of people, it is ineffable that God had started our love story in the church where we both attend. Our paths have crossed three years ago; and, never did I imagined in my wildest dreams that the man who sits on the first pew and one of those who takes charge of the powerpoint presentations during Worship Service will be the guy I’d fall in love with.

I could still vividly remember that our first conversation was under my umbrella. He even teased me for having a small umbrella that night when we bought some snacks for the Young Professional’s fellowship night. After that, we would just respectfully smile at each other whenever our paths cross in the church. But on the 12th of August 2017, the man who teased me for having a small umbrella started to pray for me. He started to think of the possibility of him being committed to me in a relationship more than friendship – something which will lead to marriage. On the other side, I was simply his co-young professional in the church excited to be involved in a church ministry. The weather that day wasn’t really favorable because of the heavy rain. Streets in the nearby blocks of my grandma’s house started to get flooded. The rain didn’t daunt me. There was that still small voice telling me to go to McDonalds and meet the focal person for the church’s E-Camp, JR, who has invited me to come along with the other young people who were prospects to become camp counselors. It took me more than an hour to have a lift going to the venue for the meeting. It was enough for me to be totally drenched. He was wearing his usual gentleman’s smile which did not even captivate me nor made me feel like a princess ready to meet her prince. No, it wasn’t like that. We waited for a few minutes and have decided to go on with our business regarding E-Camp and ended with me taking the challenge of being a part of the ministry.

September 8, 2017 – E-Camp started at Heritage Baptist Church, my home church. Kids coming from different places around Valencia, camp counselors and camp staff filled the church. Everyone is excited to grow in Christ. The rain was heavy still that night. As usual, I am again drenched by the rain. I was taken aback when I was asked to be one of those who will be handling a small group due to shortage in camp counselors. Still, I took the challenge. The two-day camp made me see the possibility of me being committed to JR. I saw his faithfulness to Christ, heart for service, and, above all, a piece of the man whom God had made him to be. I was caught by his heart totally sold out in Christ. I started to pray for what I feel for him on the 10th of September.

Time flew so fast that I found myself off to bed officially committed to JR on the 11th of October, 2017. Yes, I had a boyfriend and met his family on that night. Today, I am still amazed with how God had been so faithful in preserving me. For years, I’ve dreamed, hoped and prayed for a man who loves the Lord more than he loves me. And God gave me not exactly my ideals but someone whom He wants for me. I know there’s still a long journey that awaits us. Trials, challenges, misunderstandings and more blissful days are to come. It is just so comforting to know that we are both resting on the same God and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is our desire that God will be glorified in our relationship despite of our shortcomings. The closer we come to Him, the more we learn to love each other out of the abundance of God’s love for us.
